Industry Training is about up-skilling your people while they’re on the job to the meet the changing needs of your business.

Industry Training Organisations (ITOs) arrange and facilitate industry skill development and workplace leanring over a wide range of industries and sectors. They can also provide you with support and training to become workplace assessors.

All ITO skill development is linked to the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) which means qualifications are nationally recognised and have been developed by industry to meet the real skill needs of today and tommorrow's business.

How can workplace learning help my business?

If you have trained staff with the right skills for the job they can do a wider range of tasks and take on new responsibilities - this can help to reduce skill shortages and increase efficiency.

Some of the other benefits of workplace learning are:

  • increased productivity because your staff will have more skills and be able to work more efficiently
  • enable you to be innovative and introduce new technology to ensure you keep a competitive edge
  • it is cost effective and won’t impact significantly on work because your people can learn while they’re on the job and the ITO can subsidise the costs of learning
  • less wastage, fewer mistakes and accidents
  • better staff retention and morale – staff feel motivated and valued because they are learning new skills or able to get current skills and knowledge recognised
  • a return on investment from training ranging from 30-7,000%!

How do I get involved?

Step 1 - If you’re not sure which ITO covers your industry, contact your industry association or the ITF. Once you know your ITO give them a call to discuss your training needs.
Step 2 - The ITO will work with you and your staff to develop a tailored training plan and can also help by doing most of the paperwork and administration for you. The ITO will keep in contact with you and your trainees/apprentices throughout their training to monitor and evaluate their progress.
Step 3 - Your employee's learning will be assessed. This can be done by you or other staff becoming workplace assessors, someone from the ITO, or a tertiary provider.
