The New Zealand Vocational Education and Training Research Forum 2010 is New Zealand’s largest event dedicated specifically to research on aspects of Vocational Education and Training.
Over the last seven years the forum has brought together people from across education, government and industry sectors: researchers, students and staff from tertiary institutions, industry training organisations, industry and employee groups, and government agencies.
Last year over 200 people from NZ and across the globe attended and the event sold-out well in advance.

This year’s event includes 22 sessions over two days covering a wide range of topics such as:
- Skill utilisation and dimensions of skill demand.
- Supporting effective workplace-based learning.
- Measuring and enhancing skill impact and productivity benefits of training.
- Developing management capability.
- Comparative international approaches to vocational education and training.
- Literacy, language and learning.
- Policy issues in VET and tertiary education.
A special feature in this year’s Forum is a session devoted to showcasing the latest research on Vocational Education and Training by current and recent postgraduate students from around the country.
Keynote and Plenary Speakers
Professor Richard Lakes
Professor of Educational Policy Studies,Georgia State University, USA
Professor Lakes will speak on linking workplace development and regional economic development, using as an example the state of Georgia’s model of regional industry clusters.
Professor Paul Dalziel
Professor of Economics and Director of Regional Economic Development, AERU, Lincoln University
Professor Dalziel will present on the New Zealand country study for a major OECD research project examining skill development in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, with specific reference to innovation and the operation of skill ecosystems.
Dr John Benseman, Anne Alkema, Dr Cathy Wright
and Dr Earl Irving
Department of Labour and University of Auckland
Dr Benseman, Ms Alkema, and Drs Wright and Irving will present the results of the Department of Labour’s Upskiling Evaluation. This was a major three-year literacy and numeracy study involving 500 workers, supervisors, managers and LLN professionals, that explored the impact of embedding literacy and numeracy into 18 workplace-based training courses.
