BETA BConstructive Programme

BConstructive is an innovative, practical, multi-disciplinary programme for young people interested in a career in the construction industry. It provides an introduction to the construction trades and builds skills that can be used across the whole sector.

The BConstructive programme was developed by a group of construction-related industry training organisations (ITOs) known as BETA, the Built Environment Training Alliance. BETA includes eight ITOs. The ITOs that are part of BConstructive are: Building and Construction ITO; Creative Trades ITO; Flooring ITO; InfraTrain; Joinery ITO; and Plumbing, Gasfitting, Drainlaying and Roofing ITO.

BConstructive is a hands-on qualification programme that is primarily based in the workshop and available through secondary schools and tertiary training establishments. The course also develops literacy, numeracy and communication skills and has close links with the NCEA and Technology curriculums.

There are two qualifications currently available in the BConstructive programme, the National Certificate in Building, Construction and Allied Trades, at Levels 1 and 2. These are offered at Years 11 and 12 in secondary schools, or at polytechnics and private training institutions. The programme complements other schemes for young people such as Gateway, careers and transition programmes, work experience and Young Enterprise.

Students who participate in the BConstructive programme can go on to apprenticeships in a variety of trades such as: building, construction, plumbing, drainlaying, roofing, gasfitting, painting and decorating, infrastructure, flooring and joinery. The programme also provides a good foundation for students to enter other related areas of the construction industry such as architecture, quantity surveying and estimating.
