Industry Training Organisations

Industry Training Organisations (ITOs) develop and arrange workplace learning and vocational education for industry.

They have three main roles:

  1. set skill standards and qualifications for industry and vocational education
  2. arrange for the delivery of workplace learning and training for industry
  3. provide industry leadership by identifying skill needs, developing strategic training plans, and promoting learning that meets industry needs.

ITOs are industry bodies recognised by the government under the Industry Training Act 1992. ITOs are owned by industry (both employers and workers) and exist to ensure that the skill development needs of their industry are met. They also ensure that the views of people working in their industries are heard in the development of skill standards and qualifications.

ITOs develop and arrange workplace learning and training for over 180,000 employees and apprentices at certificate and diploma levels. They provide advice on workplace learning and can tailor learning packages to suit the needs of workers, employers and industry.

ITOs do not deliver workplace learning and training themselves - they work with employers and learners to develop arrangements for education and training that fit their needs. Learning can take place on-the-job in the workplace, or off-the-job at a tertiary education provider, such as an Institute of Technology, Polytechnic or Private Training Establishment (PTE).

If you need assistance with industry skill development or workplace learning, contact the ITO which covers your industry, or find out more about what ITOs can do for employers and learners.
